Here is some Monday theologizing for you. It’s midday on a Monday, some of us are piled high with work we put off during the holidays. Some of us dread going back to work. Some of us were disappointed with how Christmas turned out. Some of us lament this entire calendar year.

Our callings are important and good. Our days are numbered and ordered by God. The good AND bad news is that the work we do this week won’t perfectly satisfy. A new calendar year will not meet our unfulfilled desires any more than this year did. Let us feel the deep dissatisfaction with the way things are now and call out to our God who holds better blessings back that will one day be unfurled when the whole number of his people come into his kingdom.

In Isaiah 65:17, God promises, “a new heaven and earth, the former things will be remembered no more.” Let’s press onward with an educated view of history and true satisfaction and call others to join us. I am praying for you, Trinity Pres!

C.S. Lewis once wrote,

If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing. . . . I must make it the main object of life to press on to that other country and to help others do the same.
